Stefan C. KaufmannA major concern of computer linguistics is to use suitable programmes to verify hypotheses on form and function in natural language. The interest behind this is partly theoretical but also motivated by work on natural language user interfaces with a view to improving man-machine relations. The present work looks at argumentation as a phenomenon in natural language and draws upon linguistic findings to construct programme examples for the computerised analysis of causal sentences using the PROLOG programme language.
